What Is Grokipedia? xAI’s AI Encyclopedia Explained
So you've heard the name Grokipedia floating around and you're wondering what it actually is. Short answer: it's an online encyclopedia where most of the writing is done by artificial intelligence instead of human volunteers. It is run by xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk, and you can visit it at grokipedia.com.
The idea is pretty simple. Wikipedia works because thousands of volunteers write and argue over articles. Grokipedia tries a different path: let AI models do the writing, the fact-checking, and the updating, with humans stepping in only to suggest corrections. Musk's pitch is that this makes knowledge faster, more comprehensive, and — in his view — less politically biased than Wikipedia.
The basics, all in one place
- What: An AI-generated online encyclopedia.
- Who runs it: xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company.
- Where: grokipedia.com. Free to read, no paywall.
- Launched: Version 0.1 on October 27, 2025.
- How big: Around 885,000 articles at launch, growing past six million articles by early 2026.
- How editing works: You can't edit directly. You submit suggestions, and Grok reviews and applies them.
Why does it exist?
Musk has been critical of Wikipedia for years, arguing it has ideological bias. In September 2025 he announced on X that xAI was building Grokipedia as "a massive improvement over Wikipedia." Whether AI-written articles are actually more neutral than Wikipedia's volunteer-written ones is debated — AI models learn from human-written data, so they can carry biases of their own. But that debate is exactly why the project is interesting to watch.
What can you do on it?
Reading works like any encyclopedia site: search for a topic, read the article. The homepage shows featured articles, the most-read pieces, and a live feed of recent edits. If you notice something wrong, you can log in and suggest a fix through a pop-up form. Grok checks your suggestion against sources before approving it — the site's own description of the process is "proposed by readers, checked against sources, approved by Grok."
There's also a "something missing?" feature: name a topic that isn't covered yet, and Grok will write an article about it.
Is it finished?
Not even close — and the team doesn't pretend otherwise. It launched as version 0.1, hit 0.2 a month later, and reached 0.3 in September 2026 with a redesigned homepage and new logo. Musk has said the long-term plan is to rename it "Encyclopedia Galactica," after the fictional encyclopedia in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. That hasn't happened yet.
