Grokipedia Timeline: Launch, Growth, Pause and Comeback
Grokipedia has only existed since late 2025, but it's already had a dramatic little history: a big announcement, a record-fast launch, a traffic crash, explosive growth, months of silence, and a comeback. Here's the timeline with the dates that matter.
September 30, 2025 — The announcement
Elon Musk posts on X: "We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe." That's the public starting gun.
October 27, 2025 — Version 0.1 launches
Grokipedia goes live at grokipedia.com with around 885,000 AI-generated articles. The launch itself makes news twice: first for the scale, then because the site briefly crashes under the flood of curious visitors on day one.
November 2025 — Version 0.2
A month later, v0.2 arrives and the article count explodes past six million. For perspective, that's roughly the size of the entire English Wikipedia, built by AI in weeks instead of by volunteers over decades.
Early 2026 — Peak numbers
The site's live stats page reports more than six million articles and over 450,000 approved reader-suggested edits. The "latest edits" feed shows a steady flow of Grok-approved corrections. Things look healthy.
April–September 2026 — The quiet months
Then the updates stop. In August 2026, the publication Lawfare reports that as far as it can tell, no Grokipedia entry has changed in more than three months. For a project whose whole pitch is "constantly updated by AI," the silence is deafening, and commentators start asking whether xAI has quietly shelved it. Musk himself hasn't posted about Grokipedia since February.
Late September 2026 — The comeback
Edits start flowing again. The live changes log shows fresh activity, and the site begins accepting reader suggestions once more. xAI's head of design teases that the team hasn't forgotten about the project.
September 30, 2026 — Version 0.3
Exactly a year after the original announcement, v0.3 launches: a new logo, a redesigned homepage with featured articles, a most-read shelf, and a latest-edits tracker, plus a cleaner live-edits page. Article pages get nicer fact tables. Content-wise the articles look mostly the same — v0.3 is mainly about design and getting the update engine running again.
What's next?
Musk has said the eventual plan is to rename the whole thing "Encyclopedia Galactica," after Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. That hasn't happened. Whether Grokipedia keeps its new momentum or drifts quiet again is the open question — and it's the one to watch.
